Kirtan with Nina Rao

Chanting cleans the mirror of my heart to develop the clarity to slowly (but surely I’m told) find the Love and along the way, try to step out of my own reactionary behavior and see and be with all as it is. Maybe it will take at least another 108 lifetimes, but all I know is I have this moment – now.

Enjoy “What’s in the Name? – A few words on chanting or kirtanartilcle by Nina Rao

Nina Rao learned traditional chants (bhajans) from her grandfather in a village in south India when she nine years old. The chants quietly stayed with her until she rediscovered chanting with Krishna Das in New York in 1996. For many years Nina has been Krishna Das’ business manager and accompanies him musically as well. In 2007, she recorded the track ‘Nina Chalisa’ on Krishna Das’ CD “Flow of Grace ” ; January 2013 she released her debut album, “Antarayaami – Knower of All Hearts”; In August 2018 her second album “Anubhav” was released. Nina regularly leads kirtan, workshops, and retreats in her hometown of Brooklyn, New York and beyond. For more information visit NinaRaoChant.com. She is also chair woman of SavingWildTigers.org which supports conservation of wild tigers and all species in their natural habitat in India.

As a group we are inspired by the sacred sounds and love to sing in the key of “WE”. We share what is known as KIRTAN, a call and response of sacred sounds and mantras. It is the relationship to these mantras that illuminates our heart and awakens our consciousness. It is not important that you can sing or that you understand the words. KIRTAN is an experience. It is a practice to release you out of the thinking mind and drop you gently into the heart. MAN means mind and TRA is instrument. So it is through these sacred sounds we are able to conduct the instrument of the mind.

Together we create this sacred union with healing intentions for the whole of the world.

Since 2012, Astrud has been leading her band the Cosmic Caravan locally, nationally and internationally. It is with faith in the power of sound, vibration and the Bhakti Yoga tradition that she has committed herself to uplift the spirit, awaken the heart and deepen relationships to oneself and others. She passionately guides communities in the ancient art of Kirtan – singing the names of the divine through call-and-response chanting.

Astrud shows up to sing wherever she is called with a desire to lead people closer to their hearts and their truest essence – LOVE – the heart of Bhakti Yoga. She leads Kirtans at yoga studios and festivals, in addition to teaching Bhakti Yoga workshops and teacher trainings.

The practice of constant surrender is what has transformed her and inspires her the most. Astrud’s chanting is rooted in Kirtan’s traditional style of simple devotional repetition, while including her own original arrangements. She calls on her own voice to express authentically and inspires all who join her to sing in the key of “WE”.

She has opened for Jai Uttal, as well as sung with Prema Hara, the Kirtaniyas, Radiance Kirtan, and Keith Borden.

Kirtan

$10, $20 sliding scale, pay what you can | Please register in advance, a Zoom link and passcode will be provided via confirmation email.

Kirtan is part of the path of Bhakti Yoga — the path of opening the heart through devotion and surrender. It is the music of the heart, and is sung freely from the heart. No experience is necessary to participate.
Using these practices, breathing and chanting helps to release fear in these unique times.

Mirabai Warkulwiz planted her yoga and meditation roots in San Francisco at the Sivananda Center in 1998. Amazed at her healing of a back injury and many other positive life changes, she became yoga certified through 200-hour teacher training programs both at the Integral Yoga Institute in 2004, and at the Greenpath Ashtanga Studio in 2005. In July 2008 she completed another 170 hour Intermediate Teacher Training program in Asana and Pranayama through the Integral Yoga Institute in Virginia. She is attuned to Reiki Level 1, studies Aryuveda, is a dancer, and enjoys being in communion with nature. She invites all of her yoga students to transcend physical, emotional, and mental blocks to experience more spaciousness, comfort, happiness, clarity, and inner peace. As a Kirtan musician (Mirabai and Friends Kirtan Band) Mirabai leads Kirtan around the Bay Area, and enjoys implementing chanting, sound, and music into class.

The Inner Side of Chanting

by Acharya Mangalananda

Ah! The joy and the power of chanting the Divine Names! Chanting the sacred Names of God is a viable practice in every genuine spiritual Path. From the “La Ilaha illAllah” of the Sufis To the “Baruch ata Adonai” of Jewish mysticism to the Jesus Prayer of the Eastern Orthodox Church, all Traditions revere the revealed Names of the Divine and their inherent transformational power.

The practice of Yoga comes from the ancient Indian Tradition of Sanatana Dharma, commonly known as Hinduism. The very foundation of Sanatana Dharma is the inner revelation passed down from the ancient Rishis (Seers) who heard the Divine Mantras, or sound formulas, vibrating as the basis of the Universe. Beginning with the sacred “OM” sound, branching out into the eternal Gayatri Mantra and descending down into the invocative mantras calling forth all the varied forms and attributes of the one Brahman, or God, these mantras are used for meditation, purification, and invocation. Countless generations of perfected and realized Yogis and Siddhas testify to their efficacy in bringing inner awakening and healing and ultimately the revelation of the pure soul of humanity deeply buried in the human heart. The Saints have told us that the Name of God is God, the Divine revealing Itself as sound (“Shabda Brahman” – God as sound).

In our yogic practice, we use them inwardly in silent meditation, chanting them mentally and tuning them to the rhythm of the breath. Sometimes chants are intoned in a basic monotone, feeling the vibration of the voice. But the most joyous way of intoning mantras is the communal chanting of these Names set to music. This is called kirtan and has become a very popular genre of music worldwide in recent years. In this practice, the mantras are set to music, usually using the traditional ragas or scales of classical Indian music and sung in a call-and-response fashion, led by a competent musician. In this melodious and enjoyable chanting, the deep healing vibrations of each mantra are experienced, and this brings an inner joy, and occasionally even an ecstatic feeling which accounts for the popularity of the practice.

I have been practicing and performing kirtan for over 40 years and love it with all my heart. I have studied music in India and toured the world presenting kirtan events. Join me and my full kirtan band on March 13th for an evening of kirtan. Details HERE

Whether an experienced kirtan chanter, or totally new to the practice, please join us and experience the joy and upliftment of this ancient, yet eternally new and relevant practice.
