Join us in exploration of Sufi devotional music from North India and Pakistan lead by Sukhawat Ali Khan, an eleventh generation singer of the Sham Chaurasi Gharana of hindustani music in Pakistan.

In the first hour, we will focus on listening and learning the expressions of basic raags ( ragas) in sufi songs. Sukhawat ji will teach the basic characteristics and phrasing of basic raags (ragas) commonly used in qawwali music. We will introduce new materials in addition to raags we covered during our July workshop. We will also discuss the importance of poetry and music in Hindustani Sufi spiritual tradition.

After a short break, the audience is expected to participate in call and response format and sing 2 -3 popular qawwali songs lead by Sukhawat Ali Khan. We will provide the lyrics sheet with English translation.
