In “The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali”, Sutra 12 tells us that mental modifications are restrained through practice and non-attachment, Abhyasa and Vairagya in Sanskrit.
To me this signals a call to find harmony between the efforts we make in our various spiritual practices and the attitude of non-attachment as we practice. We can learn to observe our efforts in practice with a watchful eye as to how and when the efforts become less productive, depleting to our energy, or even unsafe. We can also choose to practice without expectations for the fruits of our efforts or the need to achieve a particular result.

Faith is also essential in such a well-balanced practice. We practice for the sake of practice and because we have faith in its efficacy.
